Signs of Infertility - What to Look for When You Can't Get Pregnant
Many women have some sort of infertility problem. Some show signs of infertility, but others do not even know they have a problem until they start trying to get pregnant. There are many different reasons for infertility, and the symptoms and signs differ from woman to woman. Signs of infertility may even affect the man in the relationship.
A woman should consult her doctor if she has not conceived despite trying. "Trying," in this context, means unprotected intercourse averaging three times a week for one to two years. To diagnose an infertility problem, the couple should first visit their primary care physician or regular OB/GYN. The couple may then be sent to a fertility specialist.
There are many possible signs of infertility, but the most common of these in women is an irregular menstrual cycle. However, although irregular menstruation can be one of the signs of infertility, it can also indicate other health conditions and does not necessarily mean the woman is infertile.
Weight issues are another of the signs of infertility in women. Some women who are too thin have difficulty becoming pregnant because their bodies do not receive the proper nutrients. Women who are obese, on the other hand, sometimes suffer from an imbalance of hormones, which can adversely affect the reproductive system and impair fertility.
Alcohol and drug abuse can also lead to infertility. These are causes of infertility rather than signs of infertility, but both can make a woman unable to become pregnant. Women using illegal drugs or other substances frequently cause harm to their bodies, affecting the way it functions. These women are good candidates for infertility because substance and drug abuse can and does inhibit conception and proper fetal development.
The man in the relationship may also show signs of infertility. A variety of anatomical or physical problems can signal male infertility. Undescended testicles can be a factor leading to infertility in men. Some signs of infertility in men are due to external causes. Men who wear excessively tight underwear or jeans may be unable to produce viable sperm that are capable of fertilizing a woman's egg. Excessive exposure of a man's scrotum and gonads to high temperatures can also impair a man's ability to impregnate a woman.
Several signs of infertility are the same in men and women. Both genders can be infertile due to weight problems such as obesity, or because of alcohol or substance abuse. Just like a woman's body may not function in a way that is able to support a pregnancy, a man might be infertile due to not being able to produce an adequate amount or the right type of sperm to fertilize an egg.
When a couple has been unsuccessful, despite trying to conceive, instead of jumping to the conclusion that they have an infertility problem, they should make sure they are having intercourse when the woman is ovulating. A woman can track her basal body temperature or utilize an ovulation kit to determine when she is ovulating. Frequently, the couple is just having intercourse at the wrong time of the month.
